Easy Peel the Apple Craft Printable

This printable has 2 pages.

The first page has a large apple with a spiral cutting line. The second page has a large apple core with seeds, plus a leaf and stem.

Children can color all the pieces before cutting them out. You could make a traditional red apple or try green, yellow, pink, or a mixture of colors.

Free Apple Core Craft Printable

Print the two pages on regular white printer paper or cardstock.

Regular printer paper is easier for younger children to cut, especially when following the spiral. Cardstock makes a sturdier finished craft but can be a little harder to cut with preschool scissors.

How to Make a Peel the Apple Craft

Step 1. Print the Apple Craft

Print both pages of the free apple printable.

The first page is the whole apple with the spiral line. The second page has the apple core, leaf, and stem.

Step 2. Color the Apple

Color the whole apple.

Try red for a traditional apple or make a green or yellow apple. You could also use paint, dot markers, or colored pencils instead of crayons.

Color the leaf green and the stem brown.

The apple core can be left white or colored a light cream color. Color the seeds brown or black.

Step 3. Cut Out the Apple

First, cut around the outside edge of the apple.

Next, start at the outside end of the spiral line and carefully cut along the line toward the center.

Younger children may need an adult to make the first small cut that starts the spiral.

Keep turning the paper as you cut instead of trying to turn the scissors around every curve.

When you are finished, the apple will turn into a long curly apple peel.

Step 4. Cut Out the Apple Core

Cut around the outside of the apple core.

Then cut out the leaf and stem.

You can leave the seeds printed on the core or color them before cutting out the apple.

Step 5. Put the Apple Craft Together

Add the stem and leaf to the top of the apple core.

Place the curly apple peel around or beside the core.

You can leave the pieces loose so children can play with the apple or glue them onto a piece of construction paper to make a finished fall picture.

You could also glue only one end of the apple peel down and let the rest of the spiral hang loose for a fun 3D apple craft.

Apple Scissor Skills Activity

One of my favorite things about this apple craft is that it is also an easy scissor skills activity.

Cutting a spiral is different from simply cutting around the outside of a shape. Kids need to slowly turn the paper while following the curved line.

This gives preschoolers and kindergarteners practice with:

Following a cutting line
Cutting curved lines
Turning the paper while cutting
Hand-eye coordination
Using scissors with more control
Coloring and gluing small craft pieces

If cutting the entire spiral is too difficult, let the child color the apple while an adult cuts the spiral.

For children who are ready for more scissor practice, let them cut the apple, spiral, core, leaf, and stem themselves.

How to Use the Apple Parts Book Printable

Print the apple book pages on regular white printer paper. Print double-sided if you want to assemble the pages into a small booklet using the front-and-back layout provided.

Fold the printed sheets in half and put the pages in order. Staple along the folded edge to make a simple mini apple book.

Have children:

Color the apple on the cover and write their name.
Trace the uppercase and lowercase apple-part words.
Practice writing the words on the large handwriting lines.
Draw each apple part in the drawing box.
Color the apple pictures as they complete each page.
Look at a real apple and find the peel, flesh, core, seeds, stem, and leaf.

Tips for Making This Apple Craft With Preschoolers

Children could also make their apples different colors and then sort the finished crafts into groups of red, green, and yellow apples.

For younger preschoolers, I would use regular printer paper because it is easier to cut than thick cardstock.

Let children take their time cutting around the spiral. The goal doesn't have to be a perfectly cut apple peel.

You can also make a small starter cut for them at the beginning of the spiral.

If a child isn't ready to cut the spiral, have them color and decorate the apple. An adult can cut out the pieces afterward.

For older preschoolers and kindergarteners, encourage them to turn the paper with their helping hand while keeping the scissors pointed mostly forward. This makes it much easier to follow the curved line.
